I went into Hilo to hopefully check out the Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia before they departed and succeeded. Wind and tides were not aligned for a Sunday sail off. Took me a while to locate them... they are docked on the back side of the commercial pier. Accessible walking through Gate 8 adjacent to the petroleum facility. With unfavorable conditions the two sailing canoes were tied up unattended. Covid concerns are, I guess, keeping the public at arms length.
Interestingly I was told the Captain is a woman named Lehua who will also be navigator for the voyage. A first to the best of my knowledge.
I wish them all a fair sail.
