And finding affordable hotels on the island is harder than ever. Many in the travel industry would likely agree. Damn, that tax and fee burden is large. Maybe some day only the wealthy will afford living OR visiting Hawaii.
PS. Just did a price check comparing the Naniloa to a similarly priced hotel in CA about 10 miles from Santa Barbara. Both hotels came in at about $700 for a 4-night stay starting 16th May. The Naniloa added $310 in taxes and fees, the CA hotel added $84.
“I don’t believe ending the mask requirement will have any measurable affect on passenger volumes,” said Henry Harteveldt, president of Atmosphere Research Group, a travel marketing research firm. “Higher airfares and lack of seats at affordable fares will probably be greater deterrents to people traveling this summer.”

For those now concerned about exposure to Covid while travelling by air, the places to mask up would be in the airport, in line to board, and before the aircraft fires up the ventilation system. Once airborne, you won't be breathing much of other people's air, thanks to the excellent ventilation. Seeing that the aircraft are pressurized to about 8,000 ft, you want all the O2 you can get, right?
