If the entry booths don’t have to charge an admission fee, traffic shouldn’t back up there.
Probably best to avoid the Visitor Center parking area as it’s now quite limited.
A good alternative is to drive to the Jaggar overlook parking area, there are a few short trails nearby. At KMC parking lot, you can walk out to the crater rim AND then buy an ice cream bar afterward.
Or head toward Chain of Craters road and park in the Devastation Trail lot. From there you can walk Devastation Trail or take the old Crater Rim Road which is now an easy walking path, and connects to a spectacular closeup overlook on the east side of Kilauea Crater. Good view of the recent eruptions cinder cones in the crater.
