I use "Extreme Download Manager" (free) browser extension to download streaming video into a video file to watch later. It can download a 2 hour movie in about a minute (on a fast connection) because it downloads several segments of the stream simultaneously. I use it primarily to put the video on a thumb drive so I can watch it on our flat screen in the living room rather than on a computer. It also allows for the video to be saved or converted to specific formats and to adjust things like audio levels if one needs more advanced features. It can also be used to download regular (very large) files quickly using the same technique of multi-threaded downloading.
It's pretty intuitive for people who are tech savvy, but others might struggle with using it.
