I was gonna comment in more detail on this.. ie cite all the other times we've had open vents that billowed gas and glowed but I've been waylaid with demands at work. But before we get caught up in the new eruption that started this morning..
For instance Puu Oo, when Kupaianaha was erupting and the magma was assumed to be passing under it to erupt at the lava lake further down rift.. glowed at night..
That red dot seen above at dawn was actually a large gas flame that was there for most of the time before the cone started collapsing.. and then when it did the glow grew.. as seen in this pic taken a while later from a similar vantage point where the glow is more subtle in the image but you can see that it is wider.. ie the collapse started and lava was again inside a crater there.. while Kupaianaha was erupting in the foreground...
