ironyak, I grew up on Atari ST, which eventually with a modem became my gateway to many (unauthorized) global computer networks, and ultimately to learning UNIX. Played "NetHack", which is still an engrossing offline game you can play to this day. Also massive multiplayer text games back in the 90's called MUDs or MUSHes. But when I got to college my eyes were opened to PC gaming. We used to show up at our university's computing center with pockets full of DOOM floppies and spend entire weekends in there. Warcraft 1, 2, and 3, Starcraft, Counter-Strike when it was just a buggy Half-Life Mod, Worms World Party... I didn't own Scorched Earth, but remember playing it in someone's dorm room way back!
I barely play anymore, but one game I still revisit occasionally is FTL. Space battle rogue-like (you die, you start over) and highly recommended, runs on any old potato, and completely offline.
