Quite the contradiction from the draft statement listed on page 1 of this thread and the post Tam has made on medium:
▪ No further expansion, and no new drilling in Lava Zone 1. Beyond the repower regulators have already approved, new generation on this island should be solar, wind, and storage — cheaper, safer, cleaner, and not sitting on an active rift zone.
▪ Stop spending public money to prove the resource. $15 million requested for exploration on DHHL lands, and $40–50 million in proposed test drilling, are dollars that could go to Hawaiian homestead allocations, roads, and classrooms.
---
Energy and resilience. Hawaiʻi should not be importing 90+ percent of its energy from a 2,500-mile fossil-fuel supply line that runs through the Strait of Hormuz. We should be building distributed, networked, locally owned renewable energy on every scale we can — rooftop solar, community solar, geothermal at PGV, EV charging, microgrids, virtual power plants. This is left libertarianism made physical. Power, generated and controlled by the people who use it.
I suspected an incorrect statement above, from Tam, on where Hawaii gets its' gas, diesel and oil.
"Hawaii imports over 80% of its energy as crude oil, which is processed at the state's sole operational refinery—the Par Hawaii facility in Kapolei, Oahu. This crude comes primarily from Argentina, Libya, Nigeria, Brazil, Guyana, and Alaska. The refinery processes these imports into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel."
