I'd agree that I use very little gas because I don't run out to the store constantly. I do all my errands in any specific area at the same time, which sometimes means waiting to do them.
It's the way my mom operated, to be economical about driving, and it stuck with me. When I was in high school we lived an hour away from town and many times since I've lived that way.
Combining that with my hybrid -- believe it or not, last year I filled up my tank in mid-September and didn't need gas until December. (granted, I don't commute, I didn't do any excursions around the island and that was a record for low gas consumption)
