How open and tolerant should Punaweb be?
#45
First of all, Mahalo to everyone. You are Punaweb.

The software we use here was developed elsewhere and provided free over the internet to groups or communities wanting forum capabilities. I am not capable of redesigning it in the directions suggested. But they are useful suggestions. I could turn off the post count function but see no compelling reason to do so. It has a minor purpose in identifying established members to newcomers and vice versa.

I am pondering the Dog House Forum theory. It might be an efficient way to put posters on notice that lines are being crossed and avoid directly having to wag my finger at them. No one much likes being told what to do and I don't enjoy doing it. Offensive and defensive postures get complicated quickly.

Meanwhile I am also considering taking a much more conservative line on members making personal attacks against me or other members. It is not civil behavior and I think I have been too tolerant. I learned years ago that there are critics everywhere you go in life and on everything you do. If your opinion of yourself is dependent on others then that is a real problem. A lesson years back was when I was working with Habitat for Humanity - dumbfounded to find people complaining about that organization's work.

As time moves forward we (and I) simply have to recognize that there will be people who cannot function under the house rules or in this atmosphere. I'll just have to deal with that on a case by case basis and hope that they are rare occurrences.
