The County of Hawaii uses the 1991 Uniform Building Code as amended by Hawaii County. There should be a copy of it at the Hilo Library if it isn't online somewhere.
As long as you have an exterior window you may not need an exhaust fan at all. If I remember (and it's been awhile since I've looked it up so you'd probably want to check this) the exterior window is supposed to be ten percent of the square footage of the floor area in "glazed exterior openings" (glass area)and five percent of the square footage of the floor area is to be in "openable openings".
