Hmm, wonder how long they will last?
The price of gas is changing the demographics of the Big Island. Folks are much less willing to drive to Kona for shopping these days. Is there enough population base in Kona to support these stores?
I'm thinking of dropping our Costco membership since it now costs so much to get there that all cost savings are eaten up in increased fuel costs.
Forget big box stores. What we need are small mixed merchandise shopping areas within our housing neighborhoods so folks can walk and bike to the shops instead of driving miles and miles to get there. Also folks can walk and bike to the shops to work there, as well.
We also need central hubs in each housing area - some sort of focal point for social interaction within each area. Folks aren't going to be able to afford to drive so they are going to need to get self reliant in their own areas and having a common area will help them create a social fabric which will help them help themselves as a community.
How about a community garden instead of a new produce section at some big box store 100 miles away? It would be much more sustainable.
