I recommend caution. Your best bet is probably to follow Hotzcatz suggestion of getting a Boogie board. Then go to Richardson's beach park in Hilo (http://divehilo.com/announcements.html for directions - bottom of page). Richardson's has an easy/safe entry and a pretty good break when there is the right kind of swell. Good place for learners I would think.
Second option would be to travel over to Kona and take lessons. Try http://www.oceanecotours.com/ They use foam long boards and are a great group of people. Lots of fun with them.
Good luck and stay safe.
