well, Garretto, I moved here from Oakland too, and shipped a container and two vehicles out of Oakland ... it was six years ago but experience may still apply.
We didn't find or use door to door moving.
We shipped via Matson container and I think we used CSX for the vehicles.
Matson came and delivered the container in front of our house, to be filled by us, or people of our choice. I had a friend who was a mover, and he professionally loaded the container. We had packed the boxes (meaning prepared the boxes), but we were glad that a pro mover packed them in, because nothing shifted. Your stuff will go through a lot of motion crossing the Pacific!
Matson came and picked up the container when it was full. We were down to the wire!
That night I spent in some awful hotel near the airport, as I didn't want to sleep on the bare floor ... although I could have gotten an air mattress. But it was time to go to Hawai'i, as in fact I had to hand carry our signed notarized loan docs that had been issued very belatedly by Countrywide ... and take them straight to our escrow company!
I arrived here, rented a car for one day, and the next day picked up my car at the port, which I had shipped a week prior. Then it was almost three weeks before our stuff came. We had taken a furnished rental for the interim.
The container came into port and we hired a local mover to go to the port and pick it up, transport it to our new home, and unload. The local movers worked by a set hourly rate.
So that's how we did it ... we were actually moving to Waikoloa at that time, so the container came into Kawaihae, but it would have been the same process over here.
PS. We had a lot to do to our new house, as the carpet was totally trashed and so was the paint and it was dirty ... so while waiting for the container to come we were extremely busy bees prepping the house and were glad there was no furniture because it would have been stuff we had no space or time to deal with.
