Factors which embolden & discourage thieves
#49

If each homeowner prefers to spend $500 or $1,000 on home security instead of supporting a community effort then so be it.

How shortsighted and foolish this would be. It is just a matter of time before packs of thieves hit one's own place if everyone goes it alone. Moreover, given the quotes and estimates on various home security measures I have been pricing, if such could even be effectively purchased for a mere $500 to $1,000 then I would be delighted! Doing that which one reasonably may is not inexpensive ...and yet is much less expensive than replacing all that which is ripped off, lamenting irreplaceable items lost forever, feeling like a total victim, and the potential harm to health and family from these scum roaming free & unchallenged, drugged up, and growing bolder. The better these buttworms do the worse it is for everyone else as they doubtless have all sorts of "ice" drug connections and are bad news for our kids and grandkids in every possible way.

Ideally, Puna community members will each do that which they can to make their own homes secure and not invitations for problems, be good neighbors assisting neighbors by looking out after one another (especially as when people are away on vacation and suchlike), and also pitch in together for the greater good via this effort.

What was it the great old libertine Ben Franklin said about watching out for each other? Something like "We either hang together or we shall each surely hang separately?" It was the British seeking to rob the Colonies blind and treat them like slaves, with the colonies, members of the Continental Congress, and their families each at great risk in that process instead of thugs and lowlifes ripping off households in Puna, but the sentiment seems to fit. We hang together and our strength in numbers will prevail, I am sure. Each household going it completely alone, though, ...well, over the long run how does a single sheep end up in a contest against roving packs of wild dogs?

Given Ben Franklin's good advice in this regard as well as regarding the virtues of thrift and prudent investment in general, what with his bald and bespectacled face appearing on the $100 bill, this seems like a good amount to pledge to such an effort. If even just 50 people sent $100 each then this would be enough to start things moving. If larger numbers sent something toward the effort as they could afford, whether greater or smaller dollar amounts than $100, then a genuinely significant impact could be made -and a bargain at the price!

Just one successful run of such an effort and it would pay for itself several times over in both savings to community members and increased values for their properties.

It costs thousands to tens of thousands of dollars to set up a real home security system. How much does it cost to replace a looted house? When a real estate police report map shows a number of break-ins in an area, what happens to the value of nearby properties? Becoming part of Neighborhood Watch, taking basic measures to not create oneself as a target, and then also tangibly participating in community-wide action via donating to such a fund would be a wise and cost-effective investment.

Please mark down my crew and I for our financial support, Rob!
