It's really interesting that it grows readily from cuttings here. Bougainvillea is notorious for its fussiness when being transplanted on the mainland. If its roots get disturbed too much (and they don't knit well in a pot so the root ball is minimal), it tends to die of transplant shock. Sunset Western even recommends cutting the pot away from the plant for extra gentle handling.

But here you just cut a piece and make a new plant.
