Why question what animals people love?
Love may not be the psychology in play. How about a person playing out inner aggression through keeping an aggressive animal? It's rather hard to do by owning a cat, as they won't do anything they're instructed to do. [:p]
People can acquire pets as an extension of their ego, or personality. Asshole people manage to own the dogs from hell, dogs that can kill or maim people. We're not allowed to challenge their right to behave like Jade's neighbor because dogs are also pets, and pets are GOOD?
Jade's example is good. The Humane Society has no teeth here. Sure if you trap an animal on your property they will take it, and the owner can redeem it, but who wants to trap a trained pitbull? Oh and then live with the fury of the owner. If there was an ordinance against raising such dogs, the HS could put an end to the problem before someone gets hurt.
This is Hawai'i, not Big Brother land. No one is going to go door to door taking people's dogs, like Beachboy's pitbulls. The ordinance would come into play if the dog became a problem and earned complaints, and to stop importation in the future. Don't you think?
