I call the police without hesitation upon hearing gunfire. The way I see it, either someone is in a life threatening situation and firing legally, or commiting a criminal weapons violation. Either scenario merits police attention.
I've always dialed 911 in the past because I feel that gunfire in a neighborhood is a very serious matter, and calling the emergency number would get a faster police response.
Kathy makes some valid points and I guess I should rethink my response.
Whalesong; Are you sure it was an "automatic" weapon being fired? (like a machine gun?) If so, the indiscriminent nature of that type of weapon would merit an emergency call. I've only heard single shots or "semi" automatics going off.
