I haven't felt the need to arm myself since serving in vietnam.
Some "life skills" that I practice to maintain my sense of well being:
1. I know my neighbors, and we watch over each other. We have an effective neighborhood watch and although my hood is probably at the bottom of Hawaii's socio-economic level; we have the lowest crime rate in Puna.
2. I wouldn't open the door to a Meth user. Even if he got past the dogs.
3. I don't cruise Banyon drive at three AM.
4. I greet strangers with a smile and a "howzit" and this Haoli has NEVER in twenty three years had an uncomfortable racially motivated incident.
Having said that; If I felt the need to cruise bad areas in the off hours, didn't have dogs or good neighbors, was wary of meeting new people, or didn't have a strong sense of physical well being and confidence; I'd probably move to Texas and get me a Desert Eagle.
As also previously stated; I worry more about undiagnosed paranoid crackpots that have legally obtained firearms(Randy Randrupp)Than burglers or meth addicts.
