Bullwinkle,
I am not sure I understand what you are trying to say here? I am asking because I truly do not understand. What I question is this. The emoticon is the smiley face that John used. It is used to show emotion or in other words, letting everyone know it was a joke. This cannot be taken any other way as it is an accepted form of communication on the Internet. Here is a link to the wikipedia definition:

It makes no difference how it can be interpreted in other societies because this is a forum on the Internet and that is the accepted form of communicating a joke here. This is where it was posted and this is how it should be taken. Clearly John was only joking and his statement was meant that way and should not be taken any other way than which he meant it. Even if you disagree, once he explained it was only a joke you should accept it as such.
So my question is why is John not allowed to joke around here in that manner? Everyone else is allowed to do so, why are you only holding John to a higher level than everyone else? His statement cannot be interpreted any other way than a joke because even if it was misinterpreted in the beginning he communicated otherwise. A joke, even an offensive one is still only a joke and should be treated as such. So why are you trying to hold a joke up to a professional level? I just don't get it. Are you offended by his joke? Is that it?
BTW, I live in Fern Acres and I know John pretty well. This feels more like a personal attack on John and an attempt to get him to apologize for his joke than a logical discussion of different opinions. So please explain so I can understand what you are trying to get across here.
Thanks!
Dave
