no, it's typical of the airlines to charge you more for the convenience of a direct flight, and discount itineraries that take in more markets. For example, last year it cost me 1/3 the amount to fly KOA-SFO-Sacramento than to be on the exact same plane SFO-KOA. $400 plus to Sacramento RT via SFO, $1300 direct to SFO. And no, you cannot split at your preferred airport, or they cancel your return flight and put you on a "bad" list.
