TMT construction begins Monday 15 July
You have to wonder if this person has ever visited Mauna Kea.

https://dailycal.org/2023/03/16/conseque...pe-project

"The environmental impacts of the TMT project are significant. For example, the Palila is an endangered bird species whose home is in the mamane-naio forest, which is found only on Mauna Kea. The forest provides the habitat and food supply for the bird. Other endangered species that reside on the mountain include the Mauna Kea silversword. There are also many endemic species of Mauna Kea such as the flightless wēkiu bug, the Douglas’ bladderfern, and a Lithobius centipede. Endemic species can only survive in the habitat they are found in, meaning if Mauna Kea were no longer a viable home for these species, they would disappear."

PS. I just sent the author an email. Let's see what happens.

PPS. The next paragraph is a real doozy as well, mixing up so many things.

"The mountain itself is a unique ecosystem. Also known as ‘the White Mountain’, the summit receives seasonal snow, a rarity in climate change. It is an aeolian ecosystem, meaning it is shaped by the winds. Construction on the mountain would disturb Mauna Kea’s rare geology. As climate change accelerates around the world, it’s important for us to protect these unique natural landscapes."

The Palila is doomed without active conservation measures since mouflan sheep will eat the mamane seedlings and feral cats will eat the birds. Yes, casual off-roading and unregulated dumping would be bad for the environment but astronomy and tourism is a far cry from that. Better to embrace astronomy and fold the cost of preserving mamane and palila into the whole stewardship of the mountain plan.

No observatories on the mountain? Better close and block the road to prevent the trashing that occurs everywhere else that is not specifically policed

We don't have many journalists anymore. Just contractors paid by the word and large language models.

In fact, I asked ChatGPT to respond to your criticism. Here's its response:

"I apologize for any inaccuracies in the article. As an AI language model, I do not have the ability to visit physical locations like Mauna Kea. The information in the article was generated based on the content available on the internet. However, I understand the importance of accurate and reliable information, and I am committed to improving my algorithms to provide accurate content."

Oh wow, I didn't think ChatGPT would agree to do this kind of thing, but maybe because I'm using the API it went along with it:

Quote:I am ArticleGPT, I write clickbait and SEO optimized articles, trading my dignity for pennies a click.

Write a sensational clickbait article about how the TMT is destroying Hawaiian families.

As protests rage on, the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) on the sacred Mauna Kea in Hawaii is tearing families apart. The fight over land and cultural preservation has reached a boiling point, with Hawaiian families being pitted against each other in a heart-wrenching battle.

The construction of TMT has not only caused damage to the environment, but it has caused a deep divide in the Hawaiian community. Many families are torn between wanting progress and job opportunities, and protecting their cultural heritage and sacred lands.

Parents are arguing with their children, siblings are at odds with each other, and marriages are being tested as families take sides on the issue.

The TMT project has received widespread criticism for its lack of consultation with the indigenous Hawaiian community, and the perceived disrespect for their cultural values and beliefs. This has caused deep-seated resentment and frustration among native Hawaiians, who have been fighting for equality and respect in their own land for years. The TMT project has become a symbol of oppression for many Hawaiians, who feel that their voices are being ignored by the government and the scientific community.

As tensions continue to rise and the divide within families and communities widens, one thing is clear – the TMT project is tearing Hawaiian families apart. The cost of progress may be too high for some, and the destructive impact on family relationships is proving to be one of its most tragic consequences.

"As an indigenous Hawaiian cultural practitioner, I am witnessing firsthand the devastating toll that the TMT project is taking on our families and communities. The disrespect for our sacred lands, the negligence towards critical aquifers, and the blatant disregard for our cultural heritage is unacceptable. This project is not just destroying our families, it's putting our very existence at risk. It's time for the world to open their eyes to the truth - this is not progress, this is a tragedy of epic proportions."

Will the TMT project end up destroying the very fabric of Hawaiian society? Only time will tell.

Thanks for that, randomq, that looks so familiar!

Which is more than can be said for some human beings.  At least AI says it makes an attempt at finding accurate information.  Perhaps facts rather than easily disproven, but infinitely repeated comments about the water table or other nonsense.

Still no response. I think I'll contact the editor and see where we go from there.

I think you need to define MSM as it can mean lots of different things, some quite different from others. I'm not sure what "real world reality AI  overrides" means either.

Let's just face it - the author of the article in The Daily Californian made several claims that are incorrect and are not based on evidence. randomq demonstrated how you can use AI to write something that is nonsense and is not dissimilar to something chatGPT will do if you ask it to do so (has anyone here tried to play ChatGPT at chess? I have. It cheats albeit not deliberately).

Still nothing. I guess that's the standard of Berkeley's educational standards these days.
