I heard they stopped selling a product called termout it comes in an spray can that had a small flexible hose that has a needle type device that you press into the wood and can really penetrates right into the trail. I use to to have 5 or so cans on hand really worked for me. Every place I saw droppings I squirt in some of that stuff and it killed everything in a good sized area.
I guess if I didn't have that, I'd mix up some borax acid in hot water and spray it or let it soak into the wood. I would think if you did that you'd have your house a good long time that is as long as you didn't use sheet rock in your home and had access to the beams and rafters ... Other wise you might not outlive the house that is infected.
