Pretty sure I have a smart meter? It's digital and nobody ever comes to read it.

They do -- from the road, and probably while driving by -- the "remote read" only gives the same usage totals that are shown on the meter.

"Smart" meters send real-time utilization data over a permanent uplink. Ironically, the anti-smart-meter crowd usually focuses on the uplink ("radio waves cause cancer") while ignoring the privacy implications of real-time data.
