Coquis are quiet tonight
#11
Just to add insult to the injury of apparent evolution, many in my area have noticed more and more chirping in the daytime.

I hear them during daylight all the time, usually on overcast days.

I just assumed they work in shifts.

Problem with coquis here is they're evolving, getting much bigger and growing feathers and beaks!
People are mistaking them for chickens and some are even feeding them.....

They are definitely getting bigger! No doubt there. They started off dime sized now are quarter sized or bigger. Their coqui mating call has a dual purpose. "Co" says to the other males to stay away and "qui" calls the females to them.
There's another kind of tree frog in Puna too but they are the size of a pea. The make a pleasant chittering sound that isn't too loud or obtrusive.
When they keep on chirping during the day my theory is they are either confused, ( think its still night in a dark pvc pipe or under a tarp) or they didn't get lucky last night. Our forest is like a giant nightclub to them and every coqui is looking to hook up and go home with someone. For whatever reason those coquis never got the mate. Maybe socially awkward coquis, or ugly, smelly or discordant chirping turned off the coqui babes.

In the coquis puna world it must be...

The odds are good... But the goods are odd.

Really? Any idea what they are called? Coqui relatives?

The other small frog is commonly called a greenhouse frog:

Is that the change of the season? Or just the drawing of the pen?

The coquis around my area are quiet again after a noisy start to the evening. Temperature is 74 degrees so it's not cold. It hasn't rained that much but I wouldn't call it dry. This seems very different to the last few years.

Not complaining, I'm enjoying it!
