Hawaii Supremes rule in favor of TMT
|

The TMT has followed all the rules in the comprehensive plan.
Which plan now explicitly includes consideration for "customary practices and cultural resources", despite which there will probably be more protest from those who believe their rights are being violated even though they have them in writing. Anyone else notice that "the Hawaiians" have more rights on Mauna Kea than "resident landowners" have in Leilani Estates?

Kealoha Pisciotta, one of the main telescope opponents, says she's not sure what their next steps will be. She says she doesn't hold out much hope for the legal system.

It's an ambiguous statement, but suspect she means that there is little hope for the protesters to stop the TMT through the legal process. I may be incorrect.

If these people actually cared about the 'aina, they'd be building homes for the homeless or clearing christmas berry. That's actually helping the land. What they are doing is selfish and immature, protecting their own desires and pretending its a greater cause. Look at that Kahooki guys twitter, he has Harry Potter pictures with WE ARE MAUNA KEA on it. That's so childish.

Unfortunately, I believe both sides of this issue have been victim of a large amount of misinformation and disinformation. I have the greatest respect for and admiration Hawaiian culture, and personally have great reverence for the spirit of the land and all that grows and lives upon it around me. Thats actually the primary reason I live here. However, I am also very happy with the outcome and that TMT will be moving forward. It has been a pleasant surprise to see reason prevail, its a rare thing in today's society. I also have great respect for and am happy to be close to such great research observatories that are on Mauna Kea.
Let us all take care of our land, of the great mountain Mauna Kea, of all the other mountains that give us life and land. And let us try not to devolve into more name calling, yelling, and worse; respect each other as well as our land, by taking good care not to harm either. (I can hope). If wikipedia is to be believed exorcism is still a thing in the Catholic church. Puritans gave us the Salem Witch Trials. Obviously some practitioners of Islam are insane. Right now there is rioting in Pakistan because a woman was acquitted of heresy and her execution is no longer to be looked forward to. Judaism doesn't seem to produce that many atrocities unless you ask the Palestinians who themselves have been known to get a little carried away when trying to make a point but nevertheless Judaism has its own flavor of fundamentalist nonsense. Mormons? Well there was the Mountain Meadows Massacre.
So, a handful of Native Hawaiians are claiming a dubious moral high ground which perhaps coincidentally is mostly based on a platform of "F*** You, Haole!" I could I suppose automatically accept their interpretation of things.... Or I could do them the honor of recognizing that Hawaiians are the equal of anyone and everyone else on earth, warts and all. That means that sometimes some viewpoints expressed by some Hawaiians are not going to be for lack of a better term, correct. Automatically agreeing with flawed viewpoints because of religion doesn't do anybody any good.

Thank you for your thoughtful remarks sfendt.

What a shock.
Telescope Foes Ask Hawaii High Court To Reconsider Ruling "They filed a motion Monday saying the court should adopt the opinion of a dissenting justice. The motion says Associate Justice Michael Wilson was correct in saying the impact of the Thirty Meter Telescope on existing cultural resources must be considered. The court ruled 4-1 that the land board was correct in approving a permit to build the telescope on Mauna Kea, a mountain some Native Hawaiians consider sacred." https://www.civilbeat.org/2018/11/telesc...er-ruling/ |
