When they are suddenly quiet, we assume some stray dog or predator is nearby. I think they're getting louder now that it's getting warmer at night.
What happened to the coqui frogs?

I don't mind in the distance. I just hate it when there's some right near my house.

I was once temporarily deafened by a coqui. I was at a friends place where they had an elevated lanai. I was searching around their washer/drier for a pesky coqui who seemed to be hiding under the washer. I finally noticed a floor drain nearby and put my ear down to it just as the bugger let fly. Man are they loud.

Don't have the brown anoles in Hawaiian Acres yet but I know it's only a matter of time. The coquis run rampant here and many seem to be chirping away on rainy days all the way till noon or later. I guess it doesn't matter to them if they're supposed to be nocturnal. If they don't find a mate that night they just keep chirping in the day till they do. The drought hasn't affected us much here compared to lower Puna.
On another note: You guys have wild turkeys now? That sounds like a good thing no? Yet another food source if you want to hunt and forage. Another option on the menu: Fish in the ocean, Pigs, Kalij pheasants, now turkeys? I suppose goats if you wanna go up into the mountains too. Also axis deer if you go to Maui county. Side note: There's a guy that sells deer meat and deer jerky on the side of the road. Anyone try that yet?

The idea was that they would forage in the orchard but they spend most of their time congregating around the house. I don't know why there aren't wild turkeys on the East side. I see them all over Kona. I used to see them on saddle road too but not in the last few years. Before the 2018 lava, lower leilani estates had a large flock of wild turkeys. Of course, everything has changed in lower leilani by the lava. I don’t know if the turkeys relocated elsewhere or were killed by the lava flow. Ccat

fwiw of the 20 or so different lizards in Hawaii, all non-native...... only the Jackson and a handful of lizards on Oahu can actually eat an adult coqui if they wanted to... the prob is most Big Island Jackson live in temps Coquis dislike so they dont see ea other often... The Giant Day Gecko Phelsuma madagascariensis grandis can easily get 1 foot long, they can eat them but they dont see them because they live on Oahu Green iguanas can eat them too they are big, but they dont see them because they are on Oahu same with the giant nearly 1 foot long Pitbull Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko), but they dont see them because they are on Oahu same with the giant Cuban Anole, they can eat birds! but they dont see the coqui because they are on Oahu etc. etc. bonehead op prob wrote his post at 1 AM when it was 62 degrees too.. just saying. ...

"bonehead op" is a well-respected long-time Punaweb member who has posted a whole lot of useful information over the years. Unlike yourself. You might want to consider that he is well-aware of normal coqui habits before calling him names.
Certainty will be the death of us.

Calling names or other petty condescending replies seems to be the M.O. of quite a few posters here at Puna Web. Even some of the regulars.
You make a post or ask a question and instead of an answer, they come up with something they consider witty that has very little do with the question, but at the same time insulting you in a wry manner that probably makes them feel better about themselves. You know who you are.

It seems to me that's how it's been since about 2015 or so. That's when decorum went out and impropriety became the new (and seemingly accepted) normal.
