specific to the cost of living here, how close to a living wage is $21?

Single quotation marks are also known as 'quote marks', 'quotes', 'speech marks' or 'inverted commas'. Use them to: show direct speech and the quoted work of other writers. enclose the title of certain works.
I’m thinking $21 per hour ain’t much for Kona side.

they make more than most of you realize.
$21/hr x 40 hours = $840 x 4 weeks and a few days ~ $3360 minus Fed tax - State tax - FICA.
Now check out west side rents for a month.
What they earn is less than it seems.
We stopped at Brown's Deli in the Fairmont Orchid a week ago for lunch. Couple of counter sandwiches and drinks were almost $50. While waiting, three teenage girls walked in, perfect teeth, perfect hair, manicures, pedicures, the casual clothes they wore probably cost more than each of the young woman prepping food orders made in a week. The counter was a stark dividing line between the haves and the have nots. I don't know how the young woman behind the counter came to choose their jobs at the deli. But I do know the rich girls at their tender age came by what they had more through luck than tenacity. If they had to get up at 3:30 AM to catch a flight for a Hawaiian vacation, first class seats even once a year they'd probably grumble more than the women lined up in Hilo to catch a bus at that early hour, 5 days a week 52 weeks a year.

'this' is not "this"
What's the difference between single and double quotation marks?
In US English, one uses double quotation marks when quoting. Single quotation marks are used for quotes within quotes.

I think he was questioning your use of the word dream because you had it in quotes, as if someone else had mentioned it. I didn't see anyone imply that subsistence wage labor was noble either.
That's the problem. AaronM was the one that introduced the words "dream" and "noble" into the thread, but he also called a large number of workers on the island masochists because they commute to the west side of the island. I asked what else they should do instead and there hasn't been an answer to that but instead, he tries to divert the discussion into one about grammar.

Please try to understand the difference between not understanding a post because the person is so illiterate their post can't be understood and trying to divert the discussion in order to avoid answering questions.
