Seems the good people in/around Ookala cannot effectively stop or influence the building of a wood processing plant with its associated "energy" production plant.

Doubtful the people of Hawaii will get much influence over this trash power either.

The county seems to find some sort of magic being a commercial power enabler, except...
Sadly, that even if it all could be done safely, any resulting power will be sold to HELCO at the high rates.

I'm AGAINST discouraging alternative power by tying it to HELCO.

OK, I vote:
WTE - Maybe and probably a yes as long as it's NIMBY. And why in Hilo. I would think most of the trash would come from Kona. Also, yes to better recycling and reduced product packaging. How about a grocery surcharge if you don't bring your own bags.
Wind - Yes
Solar - Yes
Geo - Yes
Wave - Yes

I go for the shotgun approach until the energy problem is solved (forign oil dependance). The Geo seems to me to be where most of our efforts should be directed.

I think a recycling program would be a better approach. If we make it easy and convenient for people to do they will do it. It is disturbing to go to the land fill and see people drive right past the recycling bin with a load of clean card board and PAY $80 a ton to dump it just because it is a little faster. Same with wooden crates and palets, whole loads of that stuff gets dumped because someone didn't want to take the time to separate it. The same goes for household waste, if there is a place to easily put recycleables seprate from the rubbish, people will use it. Most of the stuff people throw away would never reach the land fill. We just have to quit being lazy and separate. Or use materials that can safely be burned, then an incinerator might work out.

So Im against, unless they separate out the plastics and other hazardous stuff then it would be ok.
