Wife is Looking for Job

Dave, it's time to move on to Plan B. If she is good with bookkeeping than start her own business. Most small businesses use bookkeeping services instead of hiring a bookkeeper.

There are less businesses around, though, the way everyone is going out of business so not as much need for bookkeeping.

While she is waiting to find the job she wants can she make or produce anything to sell? Some sort of daily necessary product? Food is always good and gardening is enjoyable. There's the Sunday Market to sell things at, too.

A friend of mine just recently found a job, she is a lawyer and she got a job as a secretary so it would seem her employer is getting an overqualified person on a secretary's salary. I suspect that is going to become the norm, where an employer will be able to hire an over qualified person at a significantly reduced rate.

Sad when McDonalds is looking more agreeable in terms of employment offers.

It is a slap in the face to many college graduates here on the island that we have an education yet can't find a job that matches our education.

I guess that is another reason why so many college grads leave the islands after they graduate...

Even finding Employment on Oahu is getting tougher and tougher.

It was sad hearing the story of the nurse here on Punaweb applying for jobs at Walmart when we have a nursing shortage... yet no money to pay for them.

Walmarts pharmacy always seems to be busy though [V]

Or then there is plan C: Become a realtor. For about $1200 worth of training, licensing fees and a broker to back you, she could be selling real estate in a few months. SO many people have left the business because of the recession, it is a good time to get in on it, especially since you eventually want to move to the Brown Side, where the prices are much more than what they are here.

But John's Plan B; Becoming an independent accountant/book keeper is a definate idea too.

OR Plan C... the virtual assitant! She could be doing book keeping and other work for companies and individuals anywhere. She has to be a hell of a lot smarter than all of the people doing it in India. A friend of ours has a virtual assistant who lives in Iowa. She is on call 24/7 to help him with his multi million dollar business.

Plan D, go in to education, the one business which has not seen a recession. Assuming she has a BA or BS, she would only have to get a teaching credential and then she could go for it. There was a big article in the paper today about incentives to recruit teachers, especially on the big island and in rural schools.

Plan E, There is always Avon... I saw a woman set up with her truck at the senic lookout just north of Hilo this afternoon and there were FOUR customers standing in line!

Plan F, You should have seen how long the lines were today at the shave ice and coffee booths at the Chinese New Year Festival. A shave ice machine would probably only cost a few hundred dollars. It is a very high profit business and if you made your own syrups they could have all natural flavors and less sugar.

Scrap THAT Plan C! Just remember, real estate agents are not employees, they own their own business under the supervision of a Broker. About 20% of the agents did not renew their licenses in December according to DCCA, and even most of the established real estate agents are struggling now. Get into this business only if you have enough money to live on and invest into your business for a year, because you most likely will not make any money for a year.

Well, yes that is so right John... but if she is not the primary source of income for their family, they may be able to weather that waiting time. I should not have said in a few months she could be selling real estate, but she could be ready to. And with so many agents not re-newing their licenses, it could be a great time to get in and learn the trade and to be positioned to take advantage of the turn around in housing.

It does seem like the best option for anyone who cannot find a job is to be self employed in one way or another. Real Estate is just one option of many. It certainly is not for everyone.

Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement. If I came across as being in a desperate situation please let me assure you this is not the case. We are not burning through a lot of cash so we are okay for right now. I posted this because my wife is a hard worker and she wants to work. She wants to do what she is qualified for. But if we start getting desperate we will certainly consider all of your suggestions.

I was hoping that by posting this there might be someone who is looking for a good employee. We had a couple of possibilities contact us but nothing panned out. I am grateful to those who did respond.

So after I posted the previous post I went to our mailbox and got our mail from Friday. And guess what? In there was a letter from the County letting her know her application from a couple of months ago was accepted. Now she has to go for her written test in early March. The job is not an accounting job but at least it is something.

Thanks again everyone for your encouragement!!!
