Fantastic fountains this morning.  A large part of the crater floor glowed orange with fresh lava.  Venus, Jupiter in the eastern sky, south sky lit from the towering fountains, the color of a sunrise.

Happening! Spectacular dual (dueling?) fountains. With all that power, I wonder what keeps them from just blowing the middle out and creating one big vent?

That was quite an eruption, 1500 feet high, the largest yet.  I’ve seen video of Highway 11 covered with tephra some pieces as large as softballs, even reports of soccer ball sized pieces.  People in tents at Nāmakanipaio campground near Mauna Loa Road had to evacuate in the night.

A different kind of eruption this morning at the park.  Native Hawaiian protestors are at the entrance, some in warrior regalia, handing out a leaflet and greeting visitors with “you are on stolen Hawaiian land.”  They’re friendly enough, considering I was apparently trespassing. I talked to one of them for a minute or two.  He asked me to recycle the leaflet. Can’t argue with the common ground of a positive environmental message.

In some areas that could be considered as "terroristic threatening".

Yes, as long as there’s no video some will claim anything.
In this case there was no terror, no threat.
The windows at the entry booths in Volcano Park note that due to the government shutdown, they will not always be staffed.  I think the protesters saw an opportunity and took it.

Maybe members of Congress who are getting paid, but not working, could take shifts at our National Parks including Hawaii Volcanoes on Big Island.  Then they could determine whether any actual terroristic threatening occurs. And put their unearned money where their mouth is.

@leilanidude - People handing out leaflets could be considered "terroristic threatening" in some areas? In what areas exactly, as they'd have to not recognize the First Amendment.

Any chance to get an image of that leaflet/link to its info before it gets recycled? Always interested to hear what the current arguments are for land back / sovereignty. Thanks!
