MailBox Break-ins HPP
#21
Could someone remind me why USPS doesn't deliver straight to your house in HPP? Is it the same in Pahoa?

Roads should be public and must be well-maintained and passable year round.

From the USPS website.

How hard would it be to put up some video cameras aimed at the boxes or even simple digital motion activated hunting still frame cameras (only a couple hundred $)? Typically it's one person commiting the crime, nail them and it will stop till the next knuckle head rolls in.

Depends where you are in Pahoa.

Hawiian beaches/shores have mail delivery because I guess the roads are public.

Kinda strange to me why you would want a 5 mile private road. Since the subdivision is required/forced to maintain the road the people in the subdivision must pay road fee's.

Maybe the county refused to pave and maintain it? I don't know. I'm not sure but I think also if it's a public road that by law not only does the county have to maintain the road but the electrical companies get kick backs from taxes to keep "america" on the grid...

Hence no SSP fee's or any of that BS on a public road. I also think the cops gotta enforce public roads more then private roads. The list goes on and on.

And the Feds probably see it the same way as the postal service. It's a private subdivision and mail is delivered through contract carriers...not postal employees and the mail boxes are owned by HPP. It may still be a federal offense....but the feds won't enforce it. They might contract out a couple of private detectives to try and catch them

@ericlp, it can be a challenge to get the County to accept responsibility for roads- generally they have to be "up to standard" before being annexed, and even then, they are slow to accept the responsibility if there is any way they can get out of it.

It is not only incoming mail, but outgoing. I had posted here about our outgoing mail being stolen. They ripped open envelopes and threw the pieces into the shrubbery behind the boxes at 3rd & Maku'u. Filed police report.

Never mail out there unless you hand your mail to the carrier, and always pick up your mail before nightfall.

And so what would the alternative be to sending or receiving mailing HPP? Do you get a post office box? Where? Keaau? Pahoa? Hilo?

Keaau was handiest (for us), we drop in there on the way to Hilo from HPP.
But now we have a mail box in HPP. Rarely anything worth stealing in our box. Also no break-in, yet.

The mail boxes are not owned by HPP they are owned by the USPS
If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it cost when it’s free...now here come the taxes.....
