In the olden days of cannabis prohibition, the laws were sometimes not written with the "correct" Latin name, so if your particular weed were not exactly the prohibited variant, you had a simple defense against prosecution.
Modern law enforcement doesn't bother with technicalities like this; if and when they do, rest assured they've listed any and all possible Latin plant names.
