Maybe we can install a rope swing up on the TMT site. Whooops! Can't do that, but heck, it might be a good spot for a homeless camp?
When everyone was talking about taking it away from the REST OF US... All I could really think of is TMT... And all those protectors taking away a good thing from all of us. I wish they just would have all gone home.
That's the problem when we let a few take away from the many. We can't just sweep em under the carpet like we once did. Sadly these acts are the norm. Not much you can do, pretty soon those dudes that were farming in front of the king kamehameha in the park will be allowed to do so. Tents and blue tarps will become the norm... Best get use to it I suppose.

I think I am the "tax cow."
I would be happy to put a a new rope swing up next time I am Kolekole way. There were a few trees that could support one if i remember!

Don't kid yourself. Lot's of people bring in more money to the state than they take. Some don't like it and some make up crap. Despite that, it's never enough.

I wouldn't trust a rope swing to carry my weight.
If a rope swing is our biggest problem, we have it pretty good.

Leave it to dakine to bring up killing off people as part of a social justice scheme. I am hardly shocked.

I regularly see and hear the "Some of these people choose this as a lifestyle" comments used here and elsewhere to justify not helping any of the homeless, to criminalize their situation, and to push for tougher actions by cops and the police. To me this is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. If someone is homeless it is difficult to stay clean, you have no address or phone number to put on a job application, and most of your time and energy goes to pure survival, which makes improving your situation very hard. Many of the women with children who are homeless end up that way when they escape abusive relationships by running with little more than the clothes on their backs. In Honolulu, the majority of homeless are employed, they just don't make enough to pay Oahu rents and can't scrape together the money for deposits even if they found a place they could afford.
Being homeless is in no way easier than working, but once a person is homeless and unemployed it is very hard to fight your way out of that hole. At one point in my life I was very close to homeless, for most of my adult life I was employed full time, but still was one missed paycheck away from becoming homeless. All it takes is a busted car you can't afford to fix to make you miss shifts, the landlord raising your rent, or a medical emergency, and much of Hawaii County could become homeless. Maybe not all of you who came here with pensions earned in other places, or with high paying jobs like being a pilot, but for the people working in a low wage job like room cleaner or dishwasher, many of whom were born and raised here, the specter of homelessness is always on the horizon.
I am so grateful for what I have, all of which I got through hard work, but if my luck had just turned a little differently my life would be very different. Maybe some of you need to work on developing a little compassion, and not abuse all homeless people because of a small minority who "choose" to live that way.

I was just paraphrasing a local bank's economist who recently was sharing financial statistics to show how out of kilter our economy is. How corporate interests have eliminated the middle class and the polarity has cause so much capital to be held in so few hands, and further showed how if the top 100 richest were to die, and their holdings be inherited by their descendants, it would begin to be busted up and eventually trickled down to being more equitably spread around.
But of course, PM2, you can continue to rag me.. I love you for it ,)

I would argue it would be prudent to pay debt down even if it means paying a bit more in taxes. The problem is, once taxes are raised, that spending doesn't willy nilly eat all the rise up. Anyway, sorry for getting a bit OT. I wouldn't mind a rise in tax to help people get on their feet or assist folks with mental illness that prevents them from integrating with society. Or possibly donate to a charity that did same if it were well run and spent wisely to provide good results.
