That happens when somebody goes back and edits a post. In this case I added "(don't mistake the above link for endorsement of the product)" and forgot to add my usual ETA: blah blah (i've been getting lazy with that lately).
I didn't want people to think that they should rush out and buy that Burpee hybrid just because I linked to it. I may be getting better results with a much cheaper heirloom seed. Will update when the corn is ready.

The heirloom variety fell victim to maize mosaic virus. I didn't have it on the winter crop. I'll still get a spring harvest from it but I probably won't be growing it again. Today I planted the UH supersweet #2 which is supposed to be resistant. I also have some more UH seeds on the way.

A few years ago while in eden roc I had the UH corn growing both in the garden and in the green house ( in a bag of dirt). The green house ones grew faster, i dont know why.
Its also easy to save an ear aside, dry it out in the sun.. and use as a seeder... it always was the fastest growing plant in the green house, besides cucumbers,tomatoes, and zuchinni.

My corn growing experiments continue... Unfortunately some escaped goats completely decimated the Hawaiian Supersweet #2 crop, so I have no idea how that would have turned out. The Hawaiian Supersweet #9 "Silver" has what appears to be maize mosaic virus. The best summer corn so far is clearly the Hawaiian Supersweet #10 Hybrid. It shows no signs of disease or pestilence, except the stalks a donkey was able to strain his neck over the fence and get. It hasn't flowered yet but I'm trying to find a variety that grows well in Orchidland without using any pesticides. So far the #10 hybrid seems the most resistant to everything. It's a little more expensive to get the seeds because it's a 3-way hybrid, but if it fruits half as good as it's grown so far it will be worth it.

ETA: Many of the seeds they sell are frequently out of stock, so if you are thinking you might want to grow any of the UH crops, it's best to get off the fence while they are in stock. All the corn seeds are currently in stock. Also, the germination rate of the corn seeds hasn't been fantastic, so order more than you think you will need.

Hawaiian Supersweet #10 Hybrid for the win! I harvested my first ear today. It's large with sweet yellow and yellow-white kernels. Used no pesticides and it turned out great. The corn was a lot taller than I was expecting, at least 8 feet high.
