The greatest extinction event that ever occurred, usually referred to as "The Great Dying", occurred due to the series of eruptions known as the Siberian Traps that occurred over hundreds of thousands of years and released greenhouse gasses. However it wasn't the gasses released directly from the lava that caused the greatest warming. It was that these volcanos came up through and ignited huge coal deposits. We have not released nearly that much CO2 yet but we are doing so at such a rate as to accomplish in hundreds of years what the traps did in hundreds of thousands of years.

Heathland makes for great golf courses in the UK if you want to get away from the links. You might find burning coal is a bit different in Hawaii though, given there is no coal that forms naturally here. It's the same as gold mining on Mauna Kea.
