Kupuna would have to listen to the woke youngsters though, and they know better than that!
So, what you're saying is, our kupuna is just too stubborn, or dumb to listen to "woke youngsters" then.
Sure is a sad indictment of our kupuna "boomers" now don't you think? But then, isn't that a typical Gen X on up thought process?
Maybe the BBB should hire some 80-year-old to be the "Media Engagement and Digital Campaigns Manager" instead of a young studly looking Cameron? That way, the kupuna boomers might just listen up?

As a boomer (see movie thread) I don’t even like banks putting a three day hold on my checks. Especially electronic transfers.
There have always been scammers, expensive toner for xerox machines, dry oil wells in Texas, Nigerian Princes, lawyers for a long lost relative you’ve never heard of who named you as beneficiary for their incredibly immense estate…
Question: If laws are passed to address one type of monetary scam, will scammers apply for a job at McDonald’s? Or find a new target, a new technique, and keep plying their trade elsewhere? They only need a telephone and one person to fall for their spiel and they can vacation for months, even years.
Perhaps, maybe this is the crossroad of where technology and the ever evolving and changing AI could be somewhat constrained* so that it is used to prevent the scam, instead of the blank check furtherance of the scam? While not giving anyone an idea, but how much longer before "Tutu" gets an AI generated video call of her "not dead" husband and gives up everything she has to for him come back home?

As Edge (on my non-POI-one-of-the-good-ones list;) pointed out, there have always been scams and will always be scams. If anyone chooses to ignore repeated warnings and insists on give their money to a Nigerian Prince or Uncle Kimo's too-good-to-be-true boiler room investment, then that's on them, regardless of age. That's how personal responsibility works, and as I'm not addicted to making up fantasies to avoid dealing with reality that many in your generation seem so prone for, I just get to call it like I sees it (with references!)
Maybe the BBB should hire some 80-year-old to be the "Media Engagement and Digital Campaigns Manager" instead of a young studly looking Cameron? That way, the kupuna boomers might just listen up?
Sounds like a good job for a retired boomer - let us know how it goes.

Scammers, and most everyone else it seems, are way ahead of you. https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2025/10/27...new-scams/
*or regulated? by the Tech companies themselves?
Why would they do that? The tech companies make money from the scams via fake ads and overall engagement driving more eyeball hours and yet more ads. Gotta maximize those quarterly profits to boost that stock price at any cost!
https://www.reuters.com/investigations/m...025-11-06/
[Facebook's parent company] "Meta projected 10% of its 2024 revenue [or $16 billion] would come from ads for scams and banned goods, documents seen by Reuters show. And the social media giant internally estimates that its platforms show users 15 billion scam ads a day. Among its responses to suspected rogue marketers: charging them a premium for ads..." (more at link)
Oh look, another local traditional media warning from a Millennial-ish Secret Service lady and a GenX-ish researcher - nothing to see here I guess, move along, think there's a catheter commercial up next - (I can post a different local news story about scams targeting the elderly for the next several dozen posts if that helps - make sure I'm doing my part to inform those that choose to be uninformed)
Of course, as most Gen X on up think, EVERY boomer has a gaming computer, iPhone, hi-speed internet access and plays video games in their spare time, maybe even living in the Matrix, when, in reality, a majority are still mad they got rid of Lester Holt on the nightly news.
Again, a good reason why the Gen X on up could help the boomers navigate the world they have now built for themselves, maybe with in person community outreach programs? Showing the kupuna how some of these Gen X and up are using that same world they built as the ways and means to rip off that boomer generation. A generation that to some Gen X and up are apparently responsible for everything terrible in this world today, unless, of course, it's something the gen X'er and up want, then, obviously, it's perfectly OK.
But then, sees nothing wrong with technology creating algorithms that can allow some Gen X on up "influencer" to make prank videos like for example, going to Home Depot, picking up a 4 inch by 10 foot PVC drain pipe and walking around and sneaking up on some unsuspecting customer looking at which deck screws to buy and yelling BOO into the other end scaring the crap out of the poor "victim" and then specifically coded and designed algorithms take over and finds more and more content of the same and similar stunts and then recommends more and more of that content to the actual viewer of these prank videos, that generate millions of dollars for these influencers, but designing some type of algorithm that would say trigger some type of warning to say a bank officer or a family member in real time that "Tutu" is trying to do something kind of strange and not a normal pattern here with her money that maybe we should talk to Tutu and see what's up?
And yet, in these recent scams, using tech to pull them off, in the rare arrest of a scammer, we sure see a lot of Gen X on up arrestees versus the number of boomers being arrested.
Yeah, if only those damn boomers paid attention hey? Oh look, another prank video just hit my feed: (3.79 million subs and 154 million views - it must be good! And it's so funny!) Might even make Tutu wet her catheter.

Maybe education?
Excellent idea HOTPE. Like, how you can reduce your bad driving record in some cases by watching a 2-hour safe driving video, we could have our kupuna the next time they need a new catheter or say colonoscopy bag installed, be made to watch a 2-hour video on internet hi tech scams. Seeing as though most if not all boomers are apparently needing a catheter these days, it could be a win win!
As for the Hawaii Electric scam, I'd bet a significant amount of money that those "front desk workers" or the workers at the Maui store who paid the 5 grand were in any generation other than the "boomer generation."
ETA: Ignoring link already provided on the topic, proceeds to make more demands of the youth to solve the boomers' self-created problems
Not ignoring it but pointing out what the provided link actually says: (selective bolding by me for emphasis.)
How We Can Protect Hawai‘i’s Kūpuna
✅ Educate Host or attend community workshops. Share common scam red flags with kūpuna and caregivers.
✅ Monitor Keep an eye on sudden changes in financial behavior. Regularly review bank statements and transactions.
✅ Report
Contact the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov
Call SMP Hawai‘i at 1-800-296-9422 or visit www.smphawaii.org

Which would indicate scammers gonna scam, one way or another? Can we legislate scam prevention and protection from womb to tomb?

Speaking of pro-social, remember LAN parties? And swapping MP3s? Back before bandwidth at home got too good, and people actually enjoyed seeing each other in person for nerdy activities. :-)
Puna (and just our remote nature) are kinda still aligned with being anti-cloud and data-hoarding. One could have huge mp3/flak archives, all their favorite movies in disk or digital forms, complete local copy of all the millions of Wikipedia articles, tons of ebooks including DIY, construction, farming, howtos, etc, ROMs and emulators for tens of thousands of classic video games, and even offline AI that rivals ChatGPT but requires no Internet.
Sometimes I dream about a weird alternate reality where neighborhoods like Hawaiian Acres have their own low power FM radio station with pirate music and crazy callers and night time shows like the old Coast-to-Coast AM and Public Access. Where we all link up our solar systems with our neighbors to form micro-grids and trade our excess power. Mesh network with local chat and file sharing and everyone has their own web page.
We recently helped a family friend and kupuna that was hospitalized and needed her bills and affairs managed at home. Like us, she lives in Hawaiian Acres in an unpermitted home, which gets tougher as you get older, but at least you own everything and not a lot of bills. Except she was constantly out of money at the end of the month and waiting on the next social security check to get by. Come to find out, she thought she had donated once or twice to a certain candidate, but was now on three different recurring donations to PACs for this candidate, who can't even be a candidate any more, for ridiculous amounts. I guess I expect third world scammers trying to get theirs, but billionaires tricking grandmas out of their social security money over and over is a whole new level. Definitely help your kupuna with their budgeting and make sure leeches aren't bleeding them dry.

Lester Holt? Give me back Peter Jennings or Tom Brokaw. But hey, if these boomers have no phones or computers maybe you can explain how they're getting catfished or pig butchered - via the telegraph? Carrier pigeon?
Again, a good reason why the Gen X on up could help the boomers navigate the world they have now built for themselves, maybe with in person community outreach programs?
You watched the videos, right? About the open house in Aiea with the youngins trying to help inform the kupuna? (This strange insistence on having a strong opinion while being woefully uninformed even when directly provided information is a baffling behavior...) https://www.kitv.com/news/avoiding-persi...be0a8.html
"To a large degree, scammers are specifically going out and looking for anybody that was born from 1960 and before.
"Once they engage that makes for a very easy target," added Richards." (Cherise Richards of the U.S. Secret Service Honolulu Field Office)
But then, sees nothing wrong with technology creating algorithms that can allow some Gen X on up "influencer" to make prank videos...
Um, those are like Gen A/Zers pranking Millennials, not a genXer to be seen. As for algorithms, maybe use an app without them where you pick your own channels instead of being force fed content (e.g. Pipe Pipe on Android)
And yet, in these recent scams, using tech to pull them off, in the rare arrest of a scammer, we sure see a lot of Gen X on up arrestees versus the number of boomers being arrested.
When "Slick" Willie Sutton was asked in the 1930s why he robbed banks, he replied, "because that's where the money is." But hey, giving up phones, computers, and all personal wealth would make one very immune to scammers so kuddos for thinking outside the box! Maybe include that in your messaging when you do your series of Boomers supporting Boomers local seminars.

Yes! Hauling 15" CRTs and beige towers to build up an appetite. Earliest games I remember getting working were like Doom, Warcraft II (zug zug!), and Scorched Earth, but that we usually just played side-by-side on a single computer. How about you?

One could have that, probably should have that, and some people likely do have that especially after 2020 showed how shaky things could get (now there's apparently even apps for downloading Wikipedia?) I'll link up my media server to the mesh network when needed, or just wander the hills with goats and customized jump drives like a nomatic tech lending library providing front door delivery in exchange for some neighborhood fruits & veggies and warm hibiscus tea (#CozyApocalypseCore)
