Update: (*Snipped - More at link)

Hokulea and Hikianalia have successfully navigated to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands chain after a nine-island tour through French Polynesia. But the trip was not without difficulties. Two crewmembers had to be flown to Rarotonga in advance of the rest of the crew for medical attention.

They had been attended to aboard by the wa#699;a medical officer and were in stable condition; however it is Polynesian Voyaging Society practice to exercise an abundance of caution to ensure the health and safety of all crewmembers.

The two wa#699;a are a part of the Pacific Voyagers organization inspired by the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s revival of traditional navigation.

Master navigator, Kalepa Baybayan, reported 16-foot waves and 60 mph winds en route to Rarotonga, and crewmembers kept the canoes going at a very slow pace to prevent stress on the wa#699;a.

The Cook Islands Voyaging Society will be hosting celebratory gatherings and events through August 6 for crewmembers of the small fleet of Polynesian voyaging canoes.

The next stops for Hokulea and Hikianalia and their crew are the islands of Aitutaki and Suwarrow.

In this trying time, it seemed fitting to bring back the journey of our Hokule'a. Traveling the world (literally) in the way our ancestors did. IMUA, Hokule'a.

Here is the update of their progress, and may Akua protect and guide them, and keep them in the grace of our aumakua, and kupuna.

The original map was showing one canoe going west, looking like it was retracing the voyage to Rapa Nui. Now, both are going east, backtracking the Polynesian migration route back to southeast Asia.

This is starting to look like a plan to sail to the Netherlands and present a case to the World Court.

There is no down side to the re-discovery and re-assertion of Hawaiian culture in all its beautiful and profound depth. If only we can keep it out of the clutches of aimless crazies with guns.
