Flock cameras
#41
It just seems, IMHO, like all of this paranoia is retarding progress.  We can all remember the effort to get body cameras on police officers.  There was incredible resistance to Body-Worn Cameras (BWC) and it ended up working out in amazing ways that no one even expected.  Body-worn cameras (BWCs) have proven to be a useful tool to secure charges, guilty pleas, and convictions.  Ironically, one of the greatest benefits of BWCs, has been in clearing officers of false or exaggerated complaints.

So the reality is, since we are all upstanding citizens here, we are more likely to be cleared of a crime, thanks to Flock cameras.

If the cops ever bother to turn them on, that is. Seemed to be a huge problem.

Big difference however, between cops being called to a potential incident and having body cameras to record everything (including police brutality, oh wait, forgot to turn on the camera) and Flock cameras everywhere watching everything we do.

Huuuuuge difference.

And in the interest of this not being specifically Puna-related, I'm stepping away. Hope I'm not on some camera as I do...maybe I should sashay or waltz or tango away from the camera...just to make a show of doing nothing wrong *but still not wanting my every move recorded thankyouverymuch*.

Lala came through, and for most of the world around me the power was out, the net was down, the cell towers off, and my daughter, who through her formative years lived without power, no tv, almost no radio, and going to the library was a weekly ritual... said, hey this is what life was like, what's the prob? Of course I run a company remotely that is dependent upon servers, email, group chats.. and all sorts of I was dead in the water there for a while..

So.. brother 'Tang, retarding progress? What is that? Progress, when I think about it has nothing to do with how many cameras are cataloging my every move, or whether I'll be rescued one minute or another. It's the measure of how healthy and happy the babies are. Is there peace in my heart? Maybe that is a sign of old age, but brah, progress is to me is how closely aligned with nature I am, not how da machines do this or that.

Anyways, I saw this and thought of you 'Tang. Even Greg Abbot.. the frickin' gov of Texas.. has given up on Flock..

Gov. Abbott blocks funding in Texas for Flock cameras as bipartisan fury brews

Which in parts reads..

Republicans and Democrats once praised Flock Safety as a protection tool for American communities. Now politicians across the political spectrum are turning against the mass-surveillance technology.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ® froze state spending this week on the shoebox-size cameras that have proliferated across the nation.

The flow of taxpayer money halted just before the Texas Tribune published an investigation probing how one state agency poured at least $30 million into expanding the reach of the controversial automated license plate scanners.

“There is a crackdown across Texas,” Abbott spokesperson Andrew Mahaleris said in a statement.

Reports of authorities misusing the Flock network, which spans 120,000 cameras in every state except Alaska, have sparked an intense backlash, with critics asserting the crime-stopping devices too easily enable stalking or spying in the wrong hands. Abbott’s office highlighted a case in the East Texas city of Lufkin, where a police officer was indicted on felony charges after searching his ex-girlfriend’s license plate number thousands of times.

Interesting report on how Dallas uses them and the required controls as in a police report number is required for any search.

Yet, 180 miles from Dallas, we have this:

Lufkin officer accused of 10,000+ Flock searches on ex-girlfriend's plate

Sorry, access to Flock camera data SHOULD only be by a search warrant, with sworn affidavits showing probable cause and issued by an impartial judge.

Perhaps a good way for Flock advocates to prove and show their unbridled support for the cameras would be to install public web cams in their driveway and other areas of their property?  If someone is not breaking any laws, what harm is there in having unknown people and agencies watch their every action?  Show us how law abiding citizens have nothing to hide.  Show us there are no downsides to 24/7 observation.

Actions speak louder than words.  Maybe they could monetize their support for Flock, and get paid for their sincere convictions and even become paid influencers for the company?

...install public web cams in their driveway and other areas of their property?

We have not heard the term "strawman" used lately, but you sure brought it back with a big bang here HOTPE!

I'd suggest a re-reading of the Fourth Amendment. Pay particular attention to the "Reasonable Expectation Of Privacy" part and where and how that applies to your clear and blatant "strawman" argument here.

I prefer to think of it as more of a “burning man” argument.  Feel the burn. Up in flames.

Julie Jested: with sworn affidavits showing probable cause and issued by an impartial judge.

Idea endorsed by Carter Page.  LMAO.  Yea, that'll stop 'em.

Edge Biebered:  [..go ahead and Flock yourself...]

Tom, did you see that?  I'll bite anyway.  We've all been doing your driveway scenario for a good while, Edge.  You probably didn't notice because  you love it, like your Elf on a Shelf, and ubiquitous Ring cameras that can now (openly) be remotely pooled and monitored to help, "find pets".  Those private company cameras at the airport check in that you willingly consent to.  Millennials look at your post and guffaw.

Millions and millions of people will be scanned by Flock, every day, to help protect each other.  Sure, malcontents, conspiracy theorists, & sovereign types will mega-amplify the extremely rare adverse effects of this life saving gift.  But the facts remain.  We will all be safer together, with Flock.

The needs of the many...

Happy Monday Punaweb.  Smile
