MailBox Break-ins HPP
#41
Thank you, Hawaii Deborah. That is a great tip. I don't think I ever want the mailbox in HPP, though! I signed up for a mailbox at Keaau online. USPS indicated they would contact me when a mailbox comes open.

I am happy to live in a neighborhood where I will never have to evacuate for a tsunami, and I too can walk or ride my bike to my mailbox if I want to, and where I feel like my mailbox is perfectly safe because of the great job our HPP neighborhood watch does. The only crime on our street since we moved in was an inside job by teenage butthead friends of our neighbor's teenage son who stole jewelry from his host during a party. That could happen anywhere there are buttheaded teenaged boys stuck on stupid, which is everywhere except age restricted gated communities.

I do remember seeing the boxes in Vacationland and Beachlots get pried open when we stayed down there several years ago, so I think the mailbox break ins are randomly distributed through Puna depending on which lowlifes have recently moved into the neighborhood. We saw the same thing in Seaview and Ainaloa too during that time.

Neighborhood Watch has put up a sign on the boxes at 3rd & Maku'u saying "WARNING this area scheduled for surveillance" or something to that effect. I only mail out there if it's the morning on a mail delivery day - never at night since our outgoing mail was rifled through, ripped to shreds and left by the roadside a few months back.

Royall put it well, btw, about needing both physical and USPS address on all packages - you never know how they're going to ship, even if a site says they ship USPS. I can't tell you how many times I've just finished an online order and get a confirmation that says my items are shipping a different way than expected. If you have two different zip codes, as our neighbors do for physical address and for USPS address, it's impossible to put both addresses on one ship-to label. I learned this lesson in first two months we were here -- both FedEx and UPS have called to get physical address - and one time I had to go down to FedEx to pickup because the person who mailed to us didn't give them a phone number. I finally called FedEx and found my item had been waiting there for a week. Lesson learned - always put both addys.

To further complicate matters we now have UPS Mail Innovations in which, even though your item is initially shipped via UPS, they only deliver it to the nearest post office at which point USPS takes over, eventually delivering it to your mailing address. FedEx has a similar “service” called FedEx SmartPost. So best to put both addresses no matter what shipping method is listed since they now seem to be interchangeable.

HPP needs it own post office.
i know it would be hard to sell usps on it, but it is needed
11K people, half hour round trip to ether existing, anyone without a car or doesnt want to face the 130 meat grinder is out of luck, both keaau and pahoa are overloaded

ABSOLUTELY agree with you.
What does it take to get USPS in HPP? 11k people in census live in HPP. That is a lot of commuting to the PO either in Keaau or Pahoa.

As far as I'm concerned....Who needs USPS anymore in HPP? All my bills are payed electronically either on line or auto withdrawn monthly, all personal mail is sent electronically to my computer or my cell including pictures and video, and who needs all the junk mail that's delivered to your mailboxes. As long as UPS and Fed Ex deliver here when I need to order something and have it delivered....I'm fine with no USPS in HPPP

Now pizza delivery in all HPP is a totally different matter!!

Unfortunately, from what I hear, the USPS is in "close down Post Offices" mode, not "build new Post Offices" mode

Rich is very correct in stating that the USPS is in a retrenchment phase. Macuu222, I am with you on the e-payment philosophy, but there stubbornly remain some functions that seem to require snail mail access. For example, just try getting a credit card without giving them some sort of postal address or try giving an email address to be used on your driving license. We're not quite at the point of electronic totality just yet, but we're getting there.

There was a segment on KITV news tonight about CPUs (Contract Postal Units) that are private single-owner, not postal service owned, and are basically one-window, mini post offices that can be located anyplace there‘s room, inside a larger store, strip mall, maybe even on private property in HPP? They can do everything a regular post office can except passports and money orders. Just needs someone willing to start up the business. The video is on the KITV site (http://www.kitv.com/video/28994737/detail.html).
