My cats have eaten all too many geckos and not gotten sick. But they also eat rats, so they're hardy.

The gecko poo is more annoying in some homes than others. When I converted my carport into a family room, it got white baseboards to match the existing, and white windowsills. Well, geckos love this room and the white has all this brown stuck to it. It sucks. If it would wipe up easily I wouldn't mind it so much.

Our first house here had a breakfast counter that was right under the high beam in the ceiling (it had vaulted ceilings). The geckos had a perch there and dropped all over that counter, so it was completely unusable. Arghh.

I don't buy the bug theory. I've always had more geckos than bugs. There may be very small bugs that I don't see that are maintaining them; obviously they eat something to make all that poo. []

The white stuff in their poop is urea - the way reptiles bodies process urine, and the main waste product in human's urine.
Anoles are not Chameleons, but are commonly called that because they can also change color.
and for Salmonella you need to ingest the bacteria to get sick - so the main problem I've always heard is for babies that may put something that a reptile has pooped on in their mouth. Beyond that, holding a reptile has a very slim possibility of giving you Salmonella - but washing your hands is still a good idea.
