Community Time bank Available
#1
Just wanted to bring this information to you, that was offered through the Big Island Self Sufficiency group thread. I think this is a great idea and will help a lot of folks here in our community.

Aloha Kakou,

A group of us are in the exciting process of creating a community timebank. A timebank is a core economy, not a monetary economy. You bank hours as you do things for people and you use those hours to receive what you need/want done. This kind of community is working really well in places like Northern California and other areas of the mainland. It gives us all a way to have our needs/wants met without having to figure out how to find the money for it all. It offers more self-sustainability, strengthens community, builds and deepens relationships, and allows each person to be empowered as everyone has things we can each contribute.

Each person signs up for the kinds of things they would like to offer and requests whatever they would like to receive. There are lots of categories like weeding and other garden/farming activities, childcare/babysitting, petsitting/housesitting, skilled labor, home repair, office/computer assistance, transportation for errands/doctor appts., caregiving, cooking, companionship (visiting or reading to the elderly), cleaning, arts and crafts, classes and workshops, tutoring/mentoring, languages, dancing, fitness, therapies, herbal care and other wellness options, massages, music lessons, home repair, car care, hair and beauty...are only some of the options here. Even community action projects and social action interests can be put into effect with this system.

We hope to assist this timebank to become island wide. For now, we are beginning it for the Hilo and Puna areas and we are online already with everything set up. The cost is only $5 per year.

If you are ready to sign up and get started, let me know and I will get you set up.

On Saturday, July 23rd, there will be a planning meeting at my house in Nanawale. All who are interested may attend. Please call me at 965-8075 if you would like to come and I will give you directions. If you have any questions about how this works, feel free to call, also.

Aloha Pumehana,

Ellen Hope

Greetings, I think this is a great idea. I will be buying a home somewhere in Puna in about 3 months so not certain of what I will need help with but I am skilled as an apartment maintenance tech, plumber, design engineer and industrial sewer for all kinds of non-apparel sewn items and such things as custom boat covers, co-operated a home for severly disabled & medically fragile kids, adolescents and young adults and a few other things so I hink I can be helpful somewhere. When I get all moved & setteled in I will contact you. Thanks. Mr. Natural

Saw this in the NY Times today. I thought it was a good introduction to the time bank concept. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/201...&emc=thab1

Life goes on, with you or without you.
Peace and long life
