So to not derail the hot ponds thread, I am starting a new one with this quote from OLG:
"I would love to go there and love to recommend the area to others. It is a beautiful space. Really in need of facilities.
Now if the neighborhood/county could get rid of ALL (not just new construction) cess pools that seep into the tide pools it would be perfect. Yes, I know this takes much time and energy and is not free and takes planning and permits..."
The aerobic system needed to replace the cesspools existing run anywhere from $18K-22K (this current pricing as of this month). The KKWA has mandated that a change of ownership on a property will require an updated waste water system (which ever system is currently applicable to new home construction) to continue to have a water meter. At this time - (I think it has been 4 months or so this has been in effect) at least two of the existing cesspools have been replaced with upgraded systems. As more and more properties change hands, more of the cesspools will be replaced with upgraded systems.
The same person who is paying for the porta potties, is also checking to see if there is state funding available to upgrade via a grant or low interest loans.
The water is much cleaner than when many of the studies were done. I am looking at the map on page 2 of this link: http://www.co.hawaii.hi.us/env_mng/kapoh...er%205.pdf and can see right off the bat, 6 errors (lots are empty and no house, and has been so since at least 2005, and some 20+ yrs back), and a number of upgraded systems since this report was done.
People have been working on this - the KKWA primarily (not that I always agree with their methods), and of course the SOH DOH requires an updated system any time a building permit is applied for (but does not for an electrical or plumbing permit applications).
So when Vacationland House lots is attacked, yet this area is doing more than most areas to improve the water quality. Beach lots is only now looking at the method being used here to get people to upgrade.
Everyone only has so much money, and in some cases, there are a number of elderly people living on fixed incomes that can not afford to do it. Thats really the line - and theirs probably wont be upgraded until the property is sold someday.
So when you all come down here, feel free to drop couple dollars in the tide pool donation box. Nadine, our tide pool information officer, does a great job of shoooo'ing people away from pooping in the bushes, and directing them to bathrooms at the closer parks, or Pahoa. We also need the guidebooks to highlight in BOLD - there are no facilities down here, or we need the county to take over the land south of us and make it a park with bathrooms.
