Aloha Punagirl,
Yes Liza and I are still here(Atlanta), LOL. We are waiting for the economy to turn as well, but we are completely finished building our house in Vacationland. Let's get together soon, I haven't been on facebook in over a year and half now so hit me up through the forum.

I am new here on punaweb. I joined because my husband and I are planning a move to the Big Island. At first it was when we retired (10 years from now), but as a Cancer Survivor I feel blessed to have a second chance at life and I don¡¦t want to loose the opportunity to live my dream. I have watched many leave this world too soon and before they were able to do the things that they wanted most. So we are hoping that things will work out that we can move sooner than later <fingers crossed>
I am researching and learning about the island. Currently we are in the Seattle area and really don¡¦t like the rain¡K or is it the cold and rain? I¡¦m not sure¡K but I am sure that I am a warm weather girl, I love tropical climates! I think it would be OK if we could drive a few minutes to find the sunshine and a beach.
Our careers are in the Software industry. Our biggest road block right now is trying to figure out employment on the Big Island. We are wizards with computers, but it sounds like that is not as important when living the island life. ļ I am considering taking Real Estate classes so that I can look into Property Management. I guess time and more investigation will tell.
We have three small dogs ¡V they are King Charles Cavalier Spaniel/Poodle Mix. They are our ¡§kids¡¨ now that the kids are grown.
We are planning three weeks in the Milolli area during December and we are bringing one of our dogs with us ¡Vwe are currently in the process of getting all of the vet visits and tests out of the way. While we are there, we plan to visit and explore the Hilo side of the island, because I think it is where we would want to live.
I am happy to be here with you all and I hope to get to know you and learn more about island life and the puna area!

tlynn! Happy to see you are a cancer survivor like me! If you think you are getting away from rain, do not consider the east side of the big island. Remember, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!
Now, I will tell you that I moved here on 12/02/2011 (5 months ago) and it rained huge amounts the month of December. Neighbor's rain gauge clocked in 23 inches (!!) in a 36 hr. period. I lived in western Oregon for 21 years and hated that cold gloomy rain so moved to the eastern side of Oregon and loved 12 inches of annual rain and 30+ inches of snow every winter. Raising a family, loving the mountains in summer and winter, we had no interest in ever leaving "God's country" but as I got older, colder, scared of slipping on ice, approaching retirement, I chose to move to Hawaii to be closer to my wonderful daughter who lives in Maui and to never have to see another snow shovel. The rain comes often but the sun also comes out and the tradewinds are so dreamy!
The move is a huge expense so please research before making a decision.
One more thought I want to add here is when I was researching the move here, I spent lots of time reading this Punaweb forum. There are positive and negative remarks in here about the east side of the island. I have learned that many have moved here to live in "paradise" and end up hating the place. It happens, depends on the personalities of the folk moving here. Those people end up going back to the mainland with alot of investment lost. Remember, these islands are young, alive and growing, especially the Big Island. It is exciting and even spiritual in a sense to be a part of a mountain that shivers, spews, glows, destroys, and stretches. There is something special about turquoise blue waves rolling up to the black lava cliffs on the east side and crashing into the rock, spraying you with a soft warm mist of sea water. And clear nights are cherished here because you become so minute when you look up at the night sky and stare in awe at the billions and billions of stars! The young earth is so full of nourishment that tomato plants grow 10"/WEEK. I picked a cucumber two weeks after I planted a small, young plant. Instead of tossing the seeds from peppers, put them in the ground and in a week you have dozens of little starts.
When I moved here, I brought two of my "kids", two cats, and I believe they are still adapting to this tropical, temperate climate. I love their companionship. Happy to meet you and keep checking in with observations and more questions.

Hi Nana Valley! So nice to meet a fellow survivor! Yes we are reading and researching and know that we are looking at the rainier side of the island. We have only experience the Kona side in person. Our thought is that it is probably easier to find some type of work on the east side closer to Hilo? At least we are used to the rain already and having rain + warmer temps would be a definite Plus. I really, really HATE the cold.
I definitely am becoming enlightened reading this forum and I am SO GLAD that I found all of you here to level me about the idea of moving....
My ideal situation would be to work remotely from home... then when the rain comes - I can snuggle in and not have to head out until the sun returns... :-)
We are about 10 years from actual retirement, so worst case, I guess we could wait but I want to LIVE my Life and follow my dreams - only doing it with my eyes wide open.
Thanks for your input, I appreciate all of you and your knowledge - Thanks!!!

Hey everybody. My name is Pete ....my wife, little boy and i are going to be moving to the Puna area in the next couple months (from Guam where we have been for 4 years now). My nomad parents have already been exploring the island by bicycle for a month and have nothing but good things to say (which is rare for the old man (

... i can't tell you how enthusiastic i am to become an integral part of the community.
A bit about us... I am originally from Michigan where i was an organic farmer for 15 years ...basically since i could walk. I joined the service when i was 17 .... travelled the world. Met my wife Emi about 5 years back in San Diego... had my little boy a year later in Guam. It has been great out here ever since... a lot of lessons learned an misconceptions about island living squashed. It has been a fun ride up to this point. Looking forward to slowing down the pace and starting a sustainable life in Puna.
I am an avid spearfisherman and love to have big fish dinners at my place! Looking forward to talking about politics, permaculture, sustainable living and surviving in these crazy times with everyone. From what i hear, i am going to the right place. Just looking for some contacts to share some thoughts and experiences with in the mean time.
Looking forward to meeting you all soon!
-Pete

Aloha Everyone! I just recently found this forum after recommendation on Konaweb.Just some background info. After our last 2 week trip to Kauai this Feb,we HATED returning to the cold, gray skies and 6 mo. winters of Idaho. I started to research real estate prices and discovered that areas of Hawaii are actually affordable now.My plans started to snowball and hubby agreed that a year renting on Big Island after he retires Jan.2014 would be just what we needed after 38 years of the rat race.I retired 6 mo. ago after 35 years as a labor and delivery nurse. Husband Brent will have 38 with former Bell System company.- I lived in Ewa Beach on Oahu for 3 years in the late 60's as an Air Force brat. Lived in Nanakuli for 6mo.I took Hawaiian language in local schools and hula lessons. Bodysurfing was our favorite passtime.Long story short, ended up in Idaho, fell in love with high school sweetheart and abandoned plan to return to Hawaii for college. Finally after raising a daughter and completing careers, I am ready to come HOME!The rental plan has turned into a "buy a house, stay permenant" plan! Brent is so excited that he's said if he gets a buyout offer,we'll be ther sooner than 18 mo!We have decided on the area of Puna.I have read several books on living in Hawaii and lots of internet research. We will rent while house scouting and then decide what to ship over. Thanks to all of you for your valuable info. You all seem like good people.Nice to see Idaho hasn't cornered the market on that yet!
