Private Party at Pohoiki Saturday 11/17?
#1
I heard a disturbing story that the road to Pohoiki was abruptly closed to pedestrians and bicycles yesterday (with no notice) because there was a "private event" being held. I was not there so I can't verify what happened. If anyone has more information it would be great to hear about it.

Reportedly, some particular vehicles were being let in and good old Talmadge Magno was there himself with other civil defense personnel. Some friends who hiked the lava trail to get there saw a huge gathering of people. Some said it was a gathering for Kanaka Maoli with ties to the area.

While I wholeheartedly support Kanaka Maoli gathering, I have to question the timing and also the County closing the publicly funded road to a publicly funded park for a private event.

What's next? A Japanese-only picnic? A Lithuanian-only lawn bowling tournament? Harry Kim's invitation-only birthday party? I suppose if one group gets let in it should be the same for everyone.

If anyone has more first hand info I'd like to know. It seems like there's no end to this administration's bs.

There is alot of chatter on facebook about that. I hope it gets the attention it needs and people don't let it go. The county needs to be held accountable for their actions, and It doesn't happen unless people make a stink. Remember they work for us.. not the other way around.

I have a sudden craving for popcorn..

The road barricade was enforced Saturday & today for a blessing, this included walking & biking IN through the barricade, but did not stop the hike over lava & back onto the road at the kipuka pullouts, nor did it stop hiking, skateboarding or biking back to MacKenzie on the road... or even the hike all the way on the new lava trail, something many of us have been doing for a while.... some more intrepid than us with full surfboards...

The road area has not been officially opened - so they did not actually CLOSE anything... it is already closed, those of us that have gone around the barricade are entering a closed area... & the county has stated that it will not BE officially opened until the Isaac Hale facilities are ready.... this is more of a safety & sanitation thing....

Good news is the officers we talked to today at the barricade stated that the public will be able to legally use the road in 2 weeks... so not too bad considering it was only finished last week... & they gotta get those facilities up & running so (hopefully) folks will not leave their... errr... mmm... bits all over the area!

Large masses of people should go anyway and crash it.

That is troubling. Who decided who got to go and who didn't? Was this a special invite only if you were of the correct race or ethnicity? How would the police have known who was allowed? Were those that were allowed in able to drive over the road?

What exactly are you assuming? Implying? Doesn't a blanket accusation seem kind of...

What about an answer to the questions? Wouldn't that clear things up, rather than muddy the waters?

Only the barricade going in was enforced, so many DID go in from the trails, as they have been doing for months...

I am not sure why not being able to go into an area that has not been opened is so upsetting to so many... this road HAS NOT YET BEEN OPENED. the fact that we have been able to use it for the last week has been good, not being able to use the entrance for a couple of days has not effected many of the people that I know of, & certainly none of the people that have yet to go there!

For those that live in the closed area, not having the barricade to enter over the weekend was a bit of a pain, but most of them get the reason... I have no idea why those that have not been there yet are grumbling so, If you do not live there & have yet to visit the new land, why are you so concerned about the county enforcing the closed barricade, which they have announced would be closed until the facilities at Isaac Hale are safe & functional???
