Nancy,
I"ve been quoted about $4 per square foot for slab. I can't tell you the cost for post and pier but according to HPM it's more exprensive then slab becasue of the cost of flooring and floor joists. Glenn P

Glenn, would you mind sharing the source of that quote/ Email me privately if you prefer.
As I understand it, the cost of slab and even just the concrete has variables such as location, distance for delivery, size of order, etc. Last year, a member of Hilo-web, listed her slab cost as $10/sf for house in Hilo. Being that my house plana call for about 4000sf of slab, I am VERY interested in cost. David

I called Glover in Hilo for a current uote on 3,000 psi readymix delivered to Pahoa. The price was $103/ cu. yd. plus tax. It is generallt true that a concrete slab costs less to construct than a raised floor (which you refer to as post and pier). A raised floor offers a number of advantages over a concrete slab that may or may not be worth the extra expense to you.

David,
I got the $4 a square foot price from the folks in home planning dept of HPM. Glenn

Actually $4 a square foot is probably right. That’s most likely without labor and other materials like framing and rebar.
Here in California concrete cost works out to be about $1.50 to $1.55 per square foot. David D

Another thought: The question should be What do you get for $4 a square foot and what do you get for $10 a square foot. Does the price include labor and other materials? Site prep? Transpotation coast?
$4 per and $10 per could both be right. For what you get! David D

Cement is sold by the cubic yard in bulk,,not by the sq ft. The smaller sq ft is for bagged cement. The cost of the load is for the cement only and not the framing. Also, some companies are very picky about "where" they will deliver it to in regards to dirt roads and stuff like that.

Hi Nate,
I got my $1.50 to $1.55 per square foot figure form what a five yard pour cost me and the area the pour covered. I worked the concrete myself. Those guys who work concrete for a living REALLY earn their money!

Another thing to consider, slab versus post & pier, the slight earthquakes. My dad convinced me to go with post & pier, to avoid getting a crack in a slab. The post & pier should "roll" with ground. I should be starting construction in a week or 2.
