Plant ID Help, Please?
#11
there are many indiginous and endemic plants here called Uki or Uki Uki, some are in the lily family like the Dianella described earlier (with light blue to purple fruit). The one in the 4th picture is the slightly scarcer one here it is...Machaerina angustifolia... this plant will NOT cut you if you run your finger along the edge... but never do that with the similar looking but smaller and more of a bluishgreen color plant (that will cut you) Machaerina mariscoides...

PS the 5th picture you need to kill that sucker. like other said... Hawaii used to spend millions of dollars a years to try to control Miconia here (North Hilo-Hamakua is BAD) but they are losing.. it has ruined many forest in the Society Islands in only a few years..

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

I took a closer look at that sedge yesterday.
It is not saw grass.
The leaves feel similar in texture to cattail leaves.
From the growth habit, leaf shape and seed head, Machaerina angustifolia looks to be it.
It is not scarce on our lot.
We have clumps everywhere overgrown by the ulehe.
Then as I clear the ulehe, I've been finding many, many mounds of what looks to be composted materials with roots growing throughout them.
I've just recently realized that these are old dead clumps of that sedge.
I will be preserving these sedges as I push the ulehe back.
I think they will fit in nicely as I work up the lot's landscape.

That Miconia, and a couple of others I've run across, have been removed and staked out in the sun to die.

Was a Democrat until gun control became a knee jerk, then a Republican until the crazies took over, back to being a nonpartisan again.
This time, I can no longer participate in the primary.
