My wife, Julie, and I own a small cabin in Hawaiian Acres. We visit there about twice a year and plan one day to retire there. As a long time lurker I would like to thank everyone for all the useful information obtained from their posts, especially Pam, and Frank too.

We presently live in the Birmingham area, just relocating here from Michigan four months ago.

Short time lurker...a few months. Have been a resident of the State for some 22 years, the past 16 on Maui. Just purchased a lot in FA in April and plan to move over and build something of my own at some point.
I am a GIS analyst (geographic information science) at the Pacific Disaster Center here on Maui. Love to fish, work on VW's play music, surf, and garden.
Much mahalos for the info on this forum...it is a great help!

Like this topic! Nice to read about you all the hopes and dreams and challenges. I'm a gardener who loves veggies, landscaping those chickens and ducks to eat the pests and weeds, and hopefully will learn to love the call of the coqui. On another forum someone said the frogs are a soothing song for them to go to sleep with. Hope to find out by summer 06, when we move over with our menagerie. Thanks to everyone for all the shared info.

Aloha! My wife Yuko and I are currently living in Japan. I am originally from California and Yuko is from Kobe. We have a two month old baby boy. 14 years ago I lived in Kona for a year and fell in love with Hawaii. Since then I have always thought about going back. Then a friend of mine told about Puna and how affordable it was so we bought some acreage in Volcano and now we are looking to build there.
I am currently teaching here in Japan. My hobbies are photography, playing the blues harp, making beer, coin collecting and learning how to sail. My wife is a full time house wife. She is a painter as well and loves to cook! Which works out good because I love to eat!
We are looking for a change from the fast paced lifestyle here and especially now that we have a son, we would love to live in a place where it is a lot slower. More time to consider and discover things.

Aloha Ajit, Are you visiting the entire island? There is a book on amazon.com titled The Big Island Revealed to help, available at Borders also www.geckofarms.com for a map book for the east or west side lists all sub divisions, it was also availaable at Borders.
We used http://www.hilo-brokers.com/ to search for areas and properties we perhaps were interested in, and finally bought a piece of property in Eden Roc, apx 1800 foot elevation, lots of rain am and pm and cooler than ocean level. Good luck to you and your family on this new adventure.

Aloha PJ and Yuko:

Sounds like we took the same detour in life - I spent 10 years in Japan where I cut my teeth as an English teacher...then married a Japanese lady. We own a home in Puna and are looking to accelerate a permanent move there next June (we're in Chicago now). You'll be happy to know that it's pretty easy to make Japanese friends in Puna. During our recent 1-month visit we made 9 new Jps friends, some retired, others closer to our age. (Based on the age of your child, I assume we've got a couple decades on you - but we're still young enough to have fun!) If your wife would like to speak to mine, shoot us an email and we'll give you our phone number, etc. Happy to answer any questions you might have.
