OHA transfers nation-building task

In a move to maintain its neutrality, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs is handing off responsibility for the final stage of its nation-building campaign to a new group that will independently administer an election of delegates, convention and final ratification vote.

Na'i Aupuni, a group of five volunteer and unpaid directors with ties to Hawaiian royalty, has been given nearly $2.6 million originally earmarked for the effort aimed at moving Native Hawaiians a step closer to self-determination as authorized by the State.

And we all know what a resounding success that was. Akaka blew his chance and couldn't get it through even with Democratic majorities in both houses of congress and a sitting Dem president. What do you think the chances are now? Obama might try to get the Interior Dept. to create a fake Indian tribe, but that would be held up by multiple multi-year court challenges, and a significant group of Hawaiians don't want it anyway.

Caltech to Shut Down Telescope Ahead of Schedule

The California Institute of Technology announced Friday it will end operations of the facility in September. It was initially slated to be decommissioned next year.

Simon Radford, the observatory’s technical operations manager, said the telescope has had a successful life and been a part of numerous scientific discoveries, including many related to stellar formation.

“We are of course sad that it’s coming to an end,” he said. “But you know, all things come to an end.”

Caltech’s announcement came just three days after Gov. David Ige outlined his vision for better stewardship atop Mauna Kea, including decommissioning of at least three of the 13 telescopes before the controversial Thirty Meter Telescope is built.

“While this telescope has contributed to ground-breaking scientific research, it has reached the end of its useful life,” Ige said in a statement to the Tribune-Herald. “I appreciate Caltech’s commitment to dismantling this telescope quickly and restoring the site in a culturally and environmentally respectful manner.”

As previously announced in 2009, Caltech will begin planning for the dismantling of the observatory, with the return of the site to its natural state by 2018.

Opihikao, thank you for "getting it." My comments were not intended to be hostile, but to show dismay at the lack of a coherent, workable plan moving forward. Leadership seems to be the main issue, and I wish more people like you would step to the forefront of Hawaiian issue resolution.

Pahoated, you are so far off base, I doubt that it's worth the energy to type a response. I am a registered Democrat who occasionally votes for a Republican as a last resort when the Dems nominate an idiot. Trying to smear people who disagree with you with a locally obnoxious label is the lowest form of argument. But for someone who is so often free and easy with his facts, I guess that's to be expected.

I expect to take a hit as an "ugly American" for this but after months of witnessing nonsense I am reaching a saturation point where IDONTCARE. Arguments about the relative merits and legitimacy of the Hawaiian Kingdom vs the Hawaiian Nation? Someone has got to be kidding. Every time I hear a reference to royalty, bloodline, or heirs I can't believe my ears. I have been a bleeding heart liberal all my life so for me to say this shows how screwed up this whole show is. I can't be the only one. Most of the US must feel something similar.

The funny part was growing up Hawaii I was a young and dumb, believing all that crap. I might have even been of the TMT protesters. The older i got and the more I learned about the real history of Hawaii really changed my opinions.

Chunkster, mahalo again, however, my position is different from the activists on several levels. As an "assimilated Hawaiian", and a "haole" (yes, been called that by kanaka maoli before...lol), it is best left to the ones (attorneys) who understand the laws of this land. Mililani Trask is one of those warriors, as is Yuklin Aluli. If the likes of Keanu Sai and company would stand down for a moment, and realize there are others working hard at compromise, and have been for years. The Constitution drafted (in Keaukaha) for Ka Lahui Hawai'i is a great start.

Additionally, as an aside, OHA needs to be disbanded/put in receivership (whatever term applies), as does DHHL, and restructured. The masses are tired of waiting for these entities to represent beneficiaries as a whole.

MarkP, there are also "Ugly Hawaiians", so no worries. Your comment is valid. The true Ali'i are gone. We can all trace ourselves back to all Kings and Queens, (our ohana is of Keopuolani, who King Kamehameha I could only approach on his knees. Her father was Kîwala'o, King of Hawai'i island. TMT should move forward, and the UH/DLNR must enforce the conditions of all leases, and subleases. Time is of the essence, and they have had plenty time to get it right. Action is needed to placate the masses, and separate TMT (Mauna Kea) from the root of the argument which (I maintain) is reparation. However that comes is to be determined, and as long as Hawaiians keep fighting each other, nothing will get done. Ever.

Plus, the World Court is routinely ignored by the USA and other well-established governments. It's actually something of a joke when it comes to dealing with major powers.
