Apparently, the Sgt. in charge from HCPD, states "this is a first report of this kind in his experience" (*not verbatim; interviewed in link below). Here is tonight's news (Lead story; hope the link works, perhaps it will be moved to "front page" on the "News" section (Second link):

This is so unacceptable, on so many levels. Hope there is video and the offender(s) get more than the perverbial "slap on the wrist". I would hope this also falls into the Federal penalty area, if possible.

Now, the security changes will start, which is a good thing. Sure hope the security cameras provide hard proof/evidence (I know, tall order, however, our cameras at home are very clear at night). Also hoping the police and DLNR officials provide a swift, yet thorough, investigation.

SO hewa!

Space... between the ears of some people... the final frontier.
A five year mission, even a ten year mission, would have little chance of discovering intelligent life in there.
At best you might find a strange new world.

I was corrected on this before. That is a "breezeway".

"A one inch extra reason why shuttles for "everyone" who visit or works on the summit of Maunakea may be needed immediately."

I'd rather go up there when I need to with people I trust rather than with someone on a shuttle who may have a gun and wants to shoot those working on the mountain.

Snorkel - try and engage your brain. It's not astronomers who shot their own observatory.

Tom, You may have others here fooled into thinking you scientists just sit there looking through eyepieces all night; But I know the cheap debauchery that really goes on up there.

The card games....the chicken fighting..... the jello shots......It was only a matter of time before one of you shot the place up!

gypsy, I don't understand. Are you saying the bullet hole symbolizes the black holes studied in astronomy? And something else about money, and cash? Don't you care that someone might have been hurt? If this was incited by the protests in any way, it has got to be denounced. In fact, it should be denounced right now. The movement should announce it does not support any violent action, period, regardless of the source of this bullet hole.

Definitely not funny. Hopefully all those cameras and web cams up there will have some photographic evidence. At least they have Sherlock on the case.

someone took a shot at an observatory door. It could have killed someone.

Exactly.
What if it was the front door to your home? Or the door to your workplace? With a bullet hole in it. How funny is it now?

Just noticed the second picture shows the bullet hole diameter at 9.55 millimeter. Had to be from a .375 caliber, that rules out a handgun.
