No more welfare checks
#11
Only a right wing redneck would bring this up as a subject, it is a favorite of the "conservative" Republicans. Too bad for them, their emo-based belief is totally skewed, and it is the Red states (Republican) that have the highest percentages of welfare recipients, all the time whining about too much and too big of government. Hawaii is not in the top ten, even though it has the most generous welfare benefits.

Not all welfare queens are poor individuals; some of them are wealthy corporations.

"Take a look at the difference between federal spending on any given state and the federal taxes received from that state. We measure the difference as a dollar amount: Federal Spending per Dollar of Federal Taxes. A figure of $1.00 means that particular state received as much as it paid in to the federal government. Anything over a dollar means the state received more than it paid; anything less than $1.00 means the state paid more in taxes than it received in services. The higher the figure, the more a given state is a welfare queen."

Unless I'm missing something, the article, despite misusing the offensive term 'welfare queen', is only talking about how many dollars go to the FED versus how many go back to the state. This can be anything: Highway subsidies, bridges to nowhere, various pork projects, EPA multi-billion-dollar Superfund cleanup sites, etc. If that is right, then kudos to the representatives of those states for DOING THEIR JOBS OF REPRESENTING THEIR CONSTITUENCY, regardless of their political affiliation.

Give it a rest, ted.. If New Mexico is a red state in that "factual article" then you truly are full of it.

And NO, ted, it isn't just a "right wing redneck" that would bring that up. If Hawaii was no longer a state/territory, the welfare/food stamp bonanza would stop.

BTW, ted, your continual anti-Republican/conservative rants are really getting old. Who has been in charge of this state and for how how long? Blame yourself for voting in the tax and spend libbies that have accomplished little except massive debt due to the bloated government and the pensions.

Reasonable statement, bystander. Mahalo.

There are many options to consider re: Kingdom/Nation status, none of which will make all people happy. While this thread is about welfare checks, if we could become more self sufficient, and get rid of the damn ice (and other kepalo crap) that is killing our communities, we'd all be better off. Welfare checks have become a way of life, almost a career, for too long for so many.

Exactly. Wasn't it President Clinton who started the 5 years and no more welfare thing?

Do people actually get a "welfare check" or is it just EBT? How does this system work? Excuse my ignorance.

Yes, they get a welfare check, although it gets put onto the EBT card as an amount that they can withdraw as cash, much like you would use a debit card to get cash back at the store or at an ATM. There is an incredible amount of other benefits available as well. You really wouldn't believe it.

"County Housing" pays handsomely for rentals, in addition to "food stamps"/EBT/etc. For example, $1000 per month rent (figure for argument sake), depending on the number of children, the "tenant" pays $30.00 as their "portion". [:0] There are some who have children, just to keep the benefits coming.

Now, if you have young children, you get a stipend for milk (both formula & "real" milk), cheese, cereal, eggs, etc., on top of your EBT/food stamps. This is through yet another government program.

In the old days, they also paid for health insurance, and car insurance! WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS! [xx(]

Gonna go listen to some nahenahe music to calm my verve on this subject. [Smile]

(O/T) One of the best, Kahauanu Lake Trio, for "nahenahe" music:

They still do! "Quest" is the equivalent of Medicaid in Hawaii. If you qualify for EBT (food stamps) you probably get free medical care. You would also get free school bus transportation, free school breakfast AND lunches for the kids (on top of the EBT benefits...
